Marion Holiday Park in Adelaide – the ideal family getaway that’s close to home!
Sometimes we just need a break, a getaway, a refresh…..
If you’re anything like me the funds just don’t cut the impromptu jumping on a plane and heading off to sunny QLD to unwind for the weekend. As much as I’d like them to I’m just not that lucky.
So, what’s the next best thing? For me it’s getting away for a weekend with the family and checking out some of our local Adelaide holiday spots.
Recently I found a ripper of a destination and the best part - it’s only 10 minutes from my home…WINNING.
‘Why the hell would you holiday only 10 minutes from home?’ you ask ‘Why the hell wouldn’t you!’ I reply….
Marion Holiday Park has always been there (well, at least for the past 35 years), nestled snugly between busy South Road, Sturt Road and Marion Road.
To be honest it was never on my radar as a place to stay. The only reason being as it is only 10 minutes from where I live and I was once one of those people who were dumbfounded as to why someone would bother going on vacation so close to home.
I was one of those people until I had kids….
One of my greatest memories as a little tacker was heading off with the family to Wirrina Cove where we had a permanent caravan situated. So, not so long ago my husband and I bought an old 1970’s caravan to allow us make our own family holiday memories, at an affordable price. Honestly, I think it’s one of the best things that we ever did.
So, after months of driving past Marion Holiday Park and the kids glimpsing the water park every time and then the constant “Can we go there, can we go there’….mum, can we go there, mum, mum, mum’’ I succumbed and decided to book in for a long weekend for my daughter’s 3rd birthday. Best decision EVER!
We have spent more in one day just taking the kids out for only a few hours...
The pricing per night was great – we’ve spent more as a family just going to dinner and the movies. And for the cost we got to enjoy all of the facilities that the park has to offer, which includes:
A 45m lagoon pool
A second undercover heated pool
A splash water park which includes water-slides and a tipping bucket
An indoor tennis court
A games room
Adventure park playground including a giant jumping pillow
Camp kitchen & various BBQ’s
Basically enough entertainment to completely wear out the kidlets!
The park is also set amongst the Warriparinga Wetlands and Sturt Creek which make for a lovely walk and tranquil setting. Inside the park grounds it is spacious and lush being filled with shady trees and swaying ferns. I had to be pinched for thinking we were actually on holiday in QLD.
Although it’s situated in the middle of some major roads, the sound of the traffic completely disappears to be replaced with the tweeting of birds and the sense of complete relaxation.
As an added bonus whatever you may need can be found in the near vicinity – Westfield Marion is only a 5 minute drive and if you feel like a beach day then Seacliff, Brighton or Glenelg are only a short distance away.
It was also ideal as we didn’t have to pay for a dog sitter seeing as we could just drive home each day to feed the little fellas. Perfect!
The water-splash play park was a huge hit with the kids. With three water slides and a water tipping bucket they spent hours in there. To be honest the water was freezing, which is great for a really hot day to cool down, but for my bones it was just too cold. Kids seem to have some kind of super power against temperature though and they had an absolute blast getting drenched.
The heated pool was more for my liking and with two pool options there was plenty of space for everyone in the park without it seeming overcrowded.
Make it a group adventure!
Two other families loved the sound of our short family getaway so they decided to book and come along too, which made for all the more fun. The staff of Marion Holiday Park were fantastic and completely accommodating, moving things around for us so our group of three families could all be situated together.
My friend and I put up her 4 room tent by ourselves before the rest of our company arrived #girlpower. It gave me the exhilarating feeling that I was channeling Bear Grylls and once we were done I suddenly had the urge to grunt and then pee in a cup I'd made of leaves and twigs and drink it… but I sustained. It’s strange what camping can do to a person!
I loved how the camp grounds were away from the pool and water park, but we had the Adventure Playground literally at our doorstep.
This meant that our kids could play to their hearts content while us adults were able to relax at our camp site and still have a hawks eye on them. We also didn’t have to endure a constant string of ‘can we go in the pool, can we go in the pool, can we go in the pooooooooool’ as it wasn’t in their immediate line of vision.
The Adventure Park was excellent and large enough to keep our tribe of children occupied for hours. The jumping pillow was a huge success too. Have you ever tried running on one of those as an adult? It was the strangest sensation and my legs seemed to turn to jelly after about 5 minutes….I’m still amazed that the kids could stay on there for so long and were still able to walk. Give it a go for yourself and you’ll see what I mean.
