Two acts to see before the Adelaide Fringe Ends...
Here’s my reviews on two MUST SEE performances from musical duo Jamie MacDowell & Tom Thum and the hilariously smutty Shirley Gnome…

Wow – what a perfect pairing of extreme musical talent.
Australian beatboxer Tom Thum and singer/songwriter Jamie MacDowell provided us with a superb hour of tunes along with hilarious onstage banter.
The boys flowed off each other easily and had us feeling comfortable as if we were all long-time friends. How these two produced this musical magic by just using their voices and a guitar is beyond me and simply showcases artistic ability at its finest.
The show was a mix of comedy and charm with lyrics that have stuck in my head days later. Jamie’s soulful voice mixed with Tom’s incredible beatboxing was a unique match made in heaven.
I guess I could describe the mixture of Jamie MacDowell and Tom Thum as Bohemian Rap (no, not Bohemian Rhapsody – this has nothing to do with Queen!) Beats, hip-hop, funk, acoustic, soul – just incredible!
There were some old time favourite tunes that brought back some good memories of the 90’s along with a variety of newly written songs. This show could have easily been longer than an hour – I would happily listen to these two all night! In fact, I loved it so much that I bought the CD after the show…
Heads were bopping, laughter was flowing and jaws were dropping. A MUST SEE!
Don’t miss out and get to the Menagerie at the Royal Croquet Club before it’s too late – on every night, with the last show this Sunday.
With the golden voice of an angel and the dirty mind of the devil is the hilarious Shirley Gnome, currently performing in her smutty cabaret comedy ‘Taking it up the Notch’.
Hailing from Canada, Shirley brings you highly entertaining C*ntry Music featuring explicit lyrics and side-splitting puns, all matched perfectly to her wicked sense of humour.
When I got to watch this entertainment delight the room was packed. Shirley even had a returning fan-club of older gentlemen sporting tiny cowboy hats to cheer her on!
Her opening song was a brilliant rendition of an old time favourite from John Farnham – the lyrics were crude but had us all in stitches. I think old Johnny boy would have been proud and he may even wish to sing this version on his next FINAL, LAST TIME tour (insert eye-roll here!)
This song set the tone for the rest of the show and it was here that Shirley gave us all the opportunity to leave the room and run for the hills. We all stayed, of course, and were treated to a brilliantly witty show that had us entertained from start to finish.
If you’re a nun, a vegan, opposed to debauchery, merkins, fake nipple outlines, or should you basically just not have a sense of humour mixed with a slightly dirty mind then Shirley Gnome is certainly NOT the act for you!
But, if you think you can handle it and are in for an hour of non-stop laughs then get on into the Parlour at the Royal Croquet Club by the 19th March.
